AIHA UMS Chapter Meeting
September 17th 11:30-1:00pm
Topic:
Behind the Barrier: Transportation Safety & Tour of MnDOT’s Guardrail Garden
Talk and Tour:
Have you ever wondered what really happens when a vehicle hits a guardrail or how engineers choose the right barrier for a roadway?
Join the AIHA UMS Chapter this September for a behind-the-scenes visit to the MnDOT Training Facility and Guardrail Garden. We will begin with an inside look at MnDOT’s approach to worker safety and industrial hygiene, including noise, silica, lead, safety organization, and employee training.
Then we will dive into the fascinating science and engineering behind roadside barriers. Learn about different barrier systems, the forces involved in vehicle impacts, maintenance challenges, and the costs and practical decisions that shape roadway safety.
The highlight of the event will be a guided walk through MnDOT’s Guardrail Garden, where attendees can examine barrier designs up close and connect the presentation to real-world equipment and applications. We will wrap up with an interactive question-and-answer session.
This is a unique opportunity to get out of the usual meeting room, see transportation safety systems firsthand, and learn from the professionals who help keep Minnesota’s workers and roadways safe.
