SDM 2.0 Exposure Assessment Modeling Tool
Speaker: Susan Arnold, PhD, CIH, FAIHA is a proven leader with a strong global reputation in practice and research in exposure and risk assessment. She directs the Midwest Center for Occupational Health and Safety Education and Research Center at the University of Minnesota. She founded the Exposure Science & Sustainability Institute (ESSI) to serve as a conduit between her scholarly work and the world of professional practice, driving innovative research and training to meet industry-identified needs. She advises Fortune 500 companies and governmental institutions, leveraging her unique perspective from 20+ years in practice and her passion for improving workplace health and safety.
She is an expert in health and safety risk assessment strategies, improving decision-making in the face of uncertainty – toward improved risk assessment and risk management outcomes. Her research led to the development of the Structured Deterministic Model (SDM), a first-of-its-kind checklist-based chemical exposure and risk assessment modeling tool used in more than 25 countries.
An exceptional change management agent and effective communicator who brings people together to develop and implement interventions that foster improvement in workplace and community health and safety outcomes.
Her leadership in advancing the science of human health exposure and risk assessment was recognized by the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) in 2014, naming her an AIHA Fellow; a distinction awarded to only 5% of the profession.
Abstract: The Structured Deterministic Model (SDM) 2.0 provides industrial/occupational hygienists with a structured approach to assessing exposures to meet a wide range of exposure assessment decision-making needs, improving exposure judgment accuracy compared to conventional approaches. This one-hour session will focus on addressing some of the real-world challenges associated with chemical mixtures, including when to use Raoult’s versus Henry’s Law to estimate the vapor pressure of a chemical component, and how to assess exposures associated with vessel charging and batch cycles, using case studies. New functionality included in the newest version of the SDM will also be presented.
Principles of Good Practice/ Improving Exposure Judgements
Speaker: John Mulhausen, Ph.D., CIH, CSP, FAIHA is retired from 3M where he worked in a variety of global health and safety roles. He has authored / co-authored over 100 presentations, publications or professional development courses. John is an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Minnesota, a past President of AIHA, and a recipient of ABIH’s Lifetime Achievement Award, AIHA’s Edward J. Baier Technical Achievement Award, and AIHA’s Henry F. Smyth Award
Abstract: The Principles of Good Practice (PGP) initiative was established by the AIHA Guideline Foundation to document OEHS professional practices that have been determined to reliably and effectively protect workers from unacceptable risks. The first PGP developed covers the Occupational Exposure Assessment area of practice. It provides a summary of risk-critical practices for each stage of an exposure risk assessment and management program, including guidance that will improve the accuracy of exposure judgments.
The PGP bring value at every stage in a practitioner’s career, serving as a “quick start guide” for students and early career professionals, and as a continuous practice improvement guide for midcareer and more experienced professionals. The PGP also serve as a communication tool to help convey to an organization's senior management what experts have defined as important practices to safeguard the health of workers and their communities.
This presentation will provide participants with an understanding of the PGP initiative, its importance to their professional OEHS practice, and explore in some detail the Occupational Exposure Assessment PGP and its use for improving exposure risk assessment and management practices and outcomes.
