AIHA Monthly Meeting - October Feature

Going Spooky: The Hidden Hazards of Technical Death Scene Cleanup

Speaker: Scott Norman

Just in time for the Halloween season, our October AIHA Monthly Meeting takes a walk on the darker side of industrial hygiene. Join us for a fascinating and sobering look at one of the least discussed corners of the occupational safety world: the technical cleanup industry.

When someone living alone suffers a sudden medical emergency such as a stroke or cardiac arrest, the event can go unnoticed for days or even weeks. The aftermath left behind creates a scene that families are rarely equipped, emotionally or physically, to address. That is where technical cleanup workers step in, and where a host of unresolved safety, health, and regulatory questions begin.

What You Will Learn

The biological, chemical, and psychological hazards facing technical cleanup workers
Why this industry remains largely unregulated, despite the serious exposure risks involved
How insurance adjusters navigate the murky question of "how clean is clean enough?"
The gaps in current standards and what industrial hygienists can contribute to the conversation

Why Attend

This session offers a rare, behind-the-scenes look at an industry most professionals never encounter, yet one that intersects meaningfully with public health, worker safety, and insurance practice. Whether you are drawn in by the seasonal spookiness or the substantive IH content, you will leave with a new perspective on hazard assessment in unconventional work environments.
